Piracy… Are publisher’s parroting the same line complete with eye-patches and no foresight?

Mmmm, piracy…

There was a time when such a word invoked images of legendary bearded bastards of yesteryear. Grizzled seamen who roamed the high seas in search of treasures in need of liberation.They had swords, eye-patches and parrots.

Plus they consumed copious quantities of rum … which suggests many must have been part-time authors!

These days the word piracy invokes something else entirely… ’tis the mere mention of piracy that does bring forth an apparition of alarming terror – the er, umm… Internet surfing ebook buccaneer.

John Mayer: Manage the temptation to publish yourself

Here’s a great article on the musician John Mayer and his recent visit to Berklee Performance Center.

Mayer confessed to those gathered that he had an issue with social media interfering with his creativity.

But John Mayer was perhaps most enthusiastic about encouraging students to avoid letting promotion, particularly of the social media variety, interfere with their artistry.

The above quote is extremely relevant to the modern day self-publisher, in fact, it is relevant to anyone who seeks to create a lasting impression in any arena. The advent of easy-access, always-on social media means that few of us can maintain focus long enough to create anything of value.

Mayer went on to say:

This time is a really important time for you guys because nobody knows who you are, and nobody should. This is not a time to promote yourself. It doesn’t matter. This is the time to get your stuff together. Promotion can be like that. You can have promotion in 30 seconds if your stuff is good. Good music is its own promotion.

Cover designer Lauren Panepinto from Orbit Books has a great video on how to design an editable text optical illusion poster in adobe illustrator and photoshop – based on the covers for Simon Morden’s Samuil Petrovitch Science Fiction trilogy.

You may recall Lauren’s first cover design video that did the rounds on the net some time back.  That creative look into cover design was for the book Blameless by New York Times Bestselling Author  Gail Carriger.
